Don Edward Kap passed away peacefully in his sleep on Aug. 20, 2022, at the age of 94.  Dad was truly an amazing husband, father, grandfather, uncle, friend and neighbor.  Words cannot express the void in our lives with his passing.  Don was born to Hino and Sitska Kap on July 20, 1928.  He was the 3rd of 4 boys and frequently talked about how close his family was.  He grew up in what was considered Dutchtown in Ogden and lived within a block of most of his aunts, uncles and cousins.  Dad attended Pingree Elementary, Washington Jr. High and Ogden High School.  He often talked about walking from 31st below Wall Ave. all the way to Ogden High each day.

Don started working his first job when he was only 10 yrs. old.  He would wait for newspapers to be printed and would sell them along Washington and down 25th St., even selling them in the bars.  At 14 he got a job doing dishes and peeling potatoes at Ross & Jack’s Café which was the #1 place to eat in Ogden.  Dad also worked at the Ogden Arsenal where he would pack and ship war material.

After graduating from high school, Don enlisted in the Army Air Core and served for one year. It then became its own branch, the U.S. Air Force where he served a 3 yr. enlistment. He studied aircraft sheet metal and electronics. He was stationed at Ft. Douglas, San Antonio, Illinois, Kirtland New Mexico and Hickham Air Force Base on Oahu.  He was one of the few surviving WWII veterans.

Don met the love of his life, his “sweet, sweet Betty” when he returned home from the service. Dad tells the story that when he went to pick her up from a date, she was out front shoveling snow.  He said he knew right then, “that’s the gal for me”!  They were married April 11, 1952 and enjoyed 66 wonderful years of marriage until her passing in 2018.  Dad has missed her terribly these last 4 years, and we know they are having a joyous reunion.  Don and Betty were blessed with 3 children, Dean, David and Karen who love him dearly.  Don was employed at HAFB during those years maintaining electrical on aircraft. He also worked for Knight and Winward Electric after retiring from the base.

Dad loved his family and friends, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren! He enjoyed their visits so much and could sit and tell stories for hours. Dad had the most incredible memory of anyone known, and a wealth of history and information will be missed.  Everyone who knew dad loved him, including those who cared for him.  He was quiet and didn’t like attention but was so kind and made everyone feel special.  His favorite saying to the grandkids was “you’re special” and they all thought they were his favorite.

Don enjoyed puttering in his beautiful yard, watching sports on TV (especially baseball), reading, and in his younger years camping and hunting with his sons, dad, brother, and uncles. He also loved riding his Honda 90 trailbike with his brother Gordon.  Don and Karen had a special daddy/daughter relationship and would walk the neighborhood daily.  But dad’s biggest enjoyment was just being in his home that he loved so much. He was able to live there for almost 70 years.

We would like to thank all those who gave such great care to dad, especially the grandkids for tucking him in bed, bringing food, sharing stories and loving him.  Also, to his special lifelong friend Dick Heninger, great neighbors, and Brian Webster with Canyon Hospice who took such tender care of dad 7 days a week!

Don is survived by his sons Dean (Nancy), Dave (Pam), daughter Karen (Randy) King, daughter-in- law Billie Jo and grandchildren Jacob, Joshua, Nicholas (Becca) Rachel (Chris), Michelle, Ryan (Natalie), Scott (Carley), Jenna (Laurence) and great-grandchildren Corbin, Conrad, Kadence, Kashlyn, Kinley, Ari, Lola, Ryker, Tayson, Everlee, Rickey, Jaylen, Easton, a great- grandson due soon, and special nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sweet wife Betty, his parents and brothers Bob and Fred Furniss and Gordon Kap.

Graveside services will be held on Sat., Aug. 27th, 2022, at 10:00 a.m. at the Ogden City Cemetery under the direction of Myers Ogden Mortuary.
